When Door Locks Kill the Dash: Finding a Hidden Earth Fault on a VW Golf

Modern vehicles rely heavily on clean power and earth connections. When those connections are poor, the symptoms can look strange, random, and misleading.
This VW Golf came in with an unusual electrical issue. When the door locks were activated from inside the vehicle, the dash lights and information display would drop out. The vehicle had also arrived with a flat battery, even though the battery was replaced in an attempt to fix the issue.
At first glance, it would be easy to blame the battery. And to be fair, the battery was no good. We fitted a fresh battery, which improved the situation, but it did not fully fix the problem. The scan tool was still showing low voltage, most modules through codes and the dash issue was still present.
That told us the battery was only part of the story.
We started testing for voltage drop. Voltage drop testing checks how much voltage is being lost through a cable, connection, or earth point while the circuit is under load. A circuit can look fine with no load, but fail once current starts flowing.
Initial testing showed a large voltage drop, 500mv on the earth side between the battery and engine while the vehicle was running with electrical loads switched on. That was a red flag.
The transmission had previously been removed before this fault appeared, so the engine and gearbox earth straps became an obvious place to inspect. We found the gearbox earth connection had poor contact. After removing the earth strap, cleaning the mounting points, and refitting it properly, the voltage drop improved to 300mv but the dash fault was still not fully resolved.
That meant there was another issue.
The key clue was the central locking. The fault appeared when the door locks were activated, so we checked the wiring diagrams and earth point locations. The dash and central locking circuits shared some body earth points, especially EP1 and EP5.
We inspected EP1, the passenger side ground point. Voltage drop there was 3.9v! Bingo, that's the cause. We found a loose connection. There were 5 separate earth wires used on that one stud.
Once the ground point was cleaned, tightened, and secured, the voltage drop dropped back to a much healthier level of around 150 mV under load, and the dash/locking issue was resolved.
This is why electrical diagnosis needs to be done properly. A flat battery may be the symptom, not the cause. Replacing parts without testing can waste money and still leave the real fault untouched.
In this case, the correct fix was not a control module, dash cluster, lock actuator, or alternator. It was a poor earth connection.
Don’t guess your way through electrical faults. Test, prove, and repair the cause.
